Smith Academy Band

The Smith Academy Band is comprised of two groups: Middle School Band and High School Band.  Both groups rehearse four times a week during school.  Various band literature and assessment exercises are rehearsed on a daily basis. Each band rehearses and/or performs band music and instrumental studies that are appropriate for their grade level.   Performances will include music for each band - both middle and senior high - as well as music that is performed by the combined groups.
Music includes marches, contest pieces, seasonal music, patriotic music, etc. with the emphasis on recently published band literature.   The band performs in two concerts per year and at graduation.   In addition, the band is entered annually into local, regional and national band festivals/contests for evaluation and adjudication with excellent results.  The Smith Academy Band has received excellent or superior ratings for the past six consecutive years.  Any student may join the band if they have had prior playing experience on a traditional band instrument.

Honors Band (curricular):

Band students in their junior or senior grade may elect to take Honors Band.  These students meet with the regular senior high band class and must complete all expected work within that class.  Students enrolled in Honors Band must also complete several advanced technique studies and instrument specific development studies for each marking term.   Honors Band students must work on grade level appropriate solo repertoire, either quarterly or semi-annually, depending on the level of difficulty of the piece of music.  This music will be performed in regular band classes and at an annual, end of the year Honors Recital.

Jazz Band (Club)

The Smith Academy Jazz Band is available to any band student in grades 7 – 12 with emphasis on the following instruments:  trumpets, trombones, saxophones, guitar, piano, bass and drums.  Flute and clarinet may be added to the group if needed.  The Jazz Band performs big band style music of various styles including straight ahead jazz, swing, Latin, funk, rock, etc.  The Jazz Band performs at all band concerts as well as at various functions such as the Hatfield Education Foundation Smart Run, at the Hatfield Elementary School, at the Barnes and Noble Fundraiser for the school library and at the area Superintendents of Schools’ Winter meeting/luncheon.  The Jazz Band meets once a week during one of the club periods.
